A common pest to both urban and rural areas are mice. Despite the fact that encounters are often very common, this does not mean that you have to put up these pesky pests.
Avoiding Anxiety
The mere thought of rodents in a home can be enough to bring people out in a cold sweat. Noise and the simple knowledge of mice or rats existing at your location can cause anxiety and unfortunately not without good reason. All rodents are known carriers of disease and they can all cause significant and costly damage if left unchecked.
Mice are well known to cause substantial damage due to their constant gnawing on practically anything they can get their teeth on. They are also carriers of fleas and a wide range of diseases, which can be passed on to humans and household pets.
Comprehensive Survey
Before commencing any treatment, our team of technicians will ensure that we conduct a thorough survey of the site to ascertain the full extent of the mouse infestation. It is only then that we will be in a position to implement the most effective course of action to remedy the situation.
Finding the right help to combat these pests is crucial and the team at Safeguard Pest Control is ready to apply our knowledge and skill to remove all unwanted pests from your property.
The following are indicators of a mouse infestation:
- Holes
- Droppings
- Runs
- Smear marks
- Damage
- Tracks
- Nests
Mice produce a distinct odour in nests sites and harbourages that once experienced will not be forgotten.
Key Features of Mice
The adult House Mouse is small and slender about 1-2 inches long, excluding the tail. It has large ears, a pointed nose and small eyes. The tail is as long as the head and body combined. Its fur is usually light grey or brown in colour.
The House Mouse, and sometimes the Long-Tailed Field Mouse, seek the warmth and shelter of buildings for nesting sites and food. Their presence is usually detected from their dark-coloured droppings or damage to food products, packaging or building fabric.
Biology
Mice become sexually mature in eight to ten weeks and a pair may produce eight litters each of 16 young, in a year. Multiply those numbers and you arrive at a horrifying number of mice!
They climb well and can squeeze through very small gaps. These nibbling nuisances have a compulsive need to gnaw in order to keep their incisor teeth worn down to a constant length.
The average mouse sheds 70 droppings in 24 hours and urinates frequently to mark its territory. Mice are erratic, sporadic feeders, nibbling at many sources of food rather than taking repeated meals from any one item. They do not need free water to drink as they normally obtain sufficient moisture from their food.
Mice may seriously damage water and gas pipes, electric cables, packaging and food products. Many instances of electrical fires and floods have been attributed to them.
Mice can also contaminate far more food than they consume and they are capable of carrying many diseases, particularly food poisoning.
