Wasps are most active in the warmer months of the year however, they have been known to stay active into December with the warmer winters we sometimes experience. In the UK, the two main wasp species are the Common Wasp and German Wasp these both cause the most annoyance. Even with their yellow and black body: they can still be confused with hornets and honey bees.

Damage wasps cause

Wasps, as said above, can be confused with bees, in particular: Honey Bees. However, these vary in colour from golden brown to almost black and are furry, unlike wasps. In order to determine whether or not a nest is infested with honey bees or wasps, you can spot the major difference between the two; honey bees fly with their legs dangling whereas wasps keep their legs completely tucked. These species should not be confused as they can all sting when under threat as well as this, honey bees have a different process of removal thus meaning identifying the correct species is vital in choosing an efficient method of relocating, see our page about Honey bees

Only female wasps have a sting, which can be used repeatedly when threatened. More often than not, a wasp sting causes no long-term harm but it could be life-threatening if you are allergic to them. There are several ways of dealing with wasps, the most effective way to control a wasp problem and reduce the threat of stings is by dealing with the nest directly.

Wasps can build nests in many different places from under eaves and sheltered areas inside your home these include wall cavities, roof spaces as well as lofts, sheds, bushes and even holes in the ground.

Wasps have the potential to attack in large numbers if their nest is disturbed and it is always best left to a professional when control is needed. The best time to treat a nest is earlier in the year before numbers increase and the wasps become more aggressive: thus increasing the threat of stings during treatment.
